Research Interests: Research topics of interest are vast but all include a pediatric emergency medicine aspect. Much of my early research was in asthma, specifically working on ways to improve follow-up care after emergency department visits and treatment of acute pediatric asthma. I also have done work in injury prevention in the pediatric emergency department. Currently, much of my research involves mentoring younger investigators of all levels from undergraduate, medical school, residency, fellowship and junior faculty in a potpourri of areas. The Violence Prevention Emergency Tool (VPET) in the pediatric emergency department is the current project in InCHIP affiliate-related project. We recently completed development and evaluation of a screening tool to identify children at greatest risk for future exposure to violence. The next phase is a feasibility study to connect the identified youth to community resources with a planned prospective outcomes study. As Research Director for the ED at CT Children’s I’m actively involved in more than 10 projects at the moment including violence prevention ,suicide/lethal means prevention, medical marijuana in children, nutrition, obesity, Zika virus, sonographic predictors for appendicitis in children, and cyber bullying. My other primary research involvement is as the course director for 2 for-credit undergraduate honors research courses on Storrs campus and an independent research management course.
