Translational medicine coursework with capstone experience

The translational medicine classes are designed to teach students how to do clinical survey based research to be done at Children’s Hospital in Hartford, CT. As such, this pathway may be appropriate for students who are interested in clinical or public health career paths.

MCB Requirements for Honors Scholar:

  • Take 1 semester of MCB 3100 and 2-3 semesters of MCB 3189. MCB 3100 must be taken in Junior year.
  • Contact your honors advisor, who will be assigned by the general MCB advisor. This is to start the process of becoming an honors scholar. Let your honors advisor know that you are choosing this path.
  • Take Stats 1000Q or 1100Q. This can be taken concurrently with MCB 3100 or 3189. It is not a prerequisite.
  • In class, develop a hypothesis for a clinical study. Write an IRB protocol in consultation with course instructor. The protocol must be approved by the Children’s Hospital Scientific Review Committee. Attend the SRC meeting if possible. Subsequent to approval by the SRC, the protocol must be approved by Children’s Hospital IRB committee.
  • Get your honors advisor to sign off on the approved protocol.
  • Obtain and analyze the data as written in your protocol, in consultation with a Children’s Hospital faculty member or fellow.
  • Present a poster of your results during the class poster session. The poster will be developed in consultation with the course instructor and your Children’s Hospital faculty member or fellow. Your honors advisor must see and approve the poster. If your honors advisor cannot attend the class poster session, you need to make an appointment to show it to them.
  • Write a Press Release describing your work appropriate for the public. The press release needs to be approved by the course instructor and your honors advisor.

The Honors Thesis shall consist of:

  • 1. The approved IRB protocol.
  • 2. A 1 page printout of the approved poster.
  • 3. A press release about your work meant of the public, approved by course instructor and honors advisor.

NOTE: MCB 4997W is not required for this Pathway. Students are expected to take a different MCB W class to fulfill the W in the major requirement.
