A central tenet of the Molecular and Cell Biology Professional Science Master’s Program is real-world applications. Aligning our program with current industry needs is key to our students’ success, while our students bring their training, diverse preparation, and fresh minds to industry. To maintain this close connection, our program relies on industry interaction. Companies can engage with MCB’s PSM programs in many ways. To discuss any of the opportunities below or for more information on connecting with the MCB PSM programs, please contact Christine Ricci, PSM Manager.
Give a Talk or Meet with Students
This is the simplest way to get involved and can be done in-person or virtually. Possible speaker topics include:
- An overview of your career path in science
- A description of how your company utilizes genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, or microbiology to add value to your business
- New tools or techniques your company is using or considering
- A look into the hiring process for entry-level scientists at your company – what do you look for? What skills are important?
- How you solved a particular problem and what techniques your company used to solve it
- How you use your science degree in a non-traditional science career
Our students are always eager to hear from professionals in the field and appreciate the opportunity to ask them questions.
Host a Module
Modules are “executive format” courses, typically over three days (Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday). For students, the course gives them a chance to learn something new and be exposed to techniques currently used in industry. For yourself, this is a great opportunity to work closely with students and enhance soft skills surrounding training and teaching. For your company, this would be a chance to get an early look at the students in the program. Hopefully both sides learn something new by the end!
To host a module, you would need to provide a clear description of the course topic and a contact person at your company who could work with our faculty to develop the course.
Sponsor a (paid) Intern or Co-Op
Our students are required to complete a 10+ week internship or co-op as part of their degree to connect their learnings with real-world problems. These internships/Co-Ops are one of the most valuable experiences our students can have.
More generally, we can discuss a pipeline program or on-campus interview day so that your company can meet our students and see what they have to offer.
Join Our Advisory Board
To stay current in industrial trends, each Molecular and Cell Biology PSM Program has its own board.
Responsibilities include:
- Attend the Annual Board Meeting (held virtually in January)
- Agree to be contacted for advice on how the field is moving and current industrial trends
- Speak at a PSM seminar every two years while appointed
- Connect to our students through LinkedIn
